Term: Winter 2027
Instructor: Dr. Skaltsa
Delivery: In-Person
Textbook:

What was it like to live in ancient Greece? How did the ancient Greeks think, drink, eat, and have relations with one another or with other cultures? Why should we study the Greeks today? This course provides an introduction to the major aspects of ancient Greek society, literature, and culture. We look at ancient Greece on its own terms through the examination of primary sources of all types (literary, artistic, archaeological). Only a very basic chronological outline of Greek history will be provided (see CLST 200 for ā€œGreek Historyā€). Instead, the emphasis will be placed on the social, cultural, and intellectual development of the peoples of ancient Greece (Athens in the 5th and 4th centuries BC will be a notable highlight, though we will also try to move beyond it). We will also frequently investigate the legacy of Greek culture in our own societies and interrogate its relevance.
