Em is a second year M.A. student working under the supervision of Dr. Steven Maynard. Their thesis aims to historicize the broad processes of queer economic cultures by localizing them within a study of Toronto between ~1975-1990, during a period marked by the rise of visible and politicized queer communities and the emergence of the "pink economy." The project seeks to answer key questions about the queer consumer, capitalism's impact on queer community, activism and identity, and how queer publications and spaces served as both cultural and commercial entities.
