Bioethics is a branch of moral philosophy concerned with ethical questions relating to medicine and healthcare. This course focuses on a select number of central and contested issues in contemporary bioethics, with an emphasis on depth of inquiry over breadth of coverage. The aim is to develop a deeper understanding of how these debates are structured, why disagreement persists among reasonable interlocutors, and what kinds of moral considerations will be relevant to their resolution. Among the debates we examine are those concerning the moral status of: abortion, medical assistance in dying, vaccine mandates, and conscientious objection.
