Course Description

Advances in biological knowledge bring us closer to a world where we may have the ability to directly manipulate our genetic make-up. With this ability comes new questions concerning the demands of distributive justice. This team-based learning course is designed to provide you with, and help refine, the intellectual skills needed to address a subset of some of the most significant and complex policy decision-making issues of the twenty-first century— advances in biomedical science (like genome editing). Issues in the class addressed include eugenics, the therapy/enhancement distinction, cognitive enhancement, aging, reproductive freedom, and enhancement in sport, the military, love, and human nature. The course is designed to explore the different challenges society faces as a consequence of the genetic revolution and to help equip students with the critical and analytical skills needed to think rationally and cogently about the regulation of new biomedical technologies.
