This summer, I struck a committee to review the Agnes Benidickson Tricolour Award Terms of Reference, which were last updated in 2021. After chairing the Tricolour Award Selection Committee last year, I discovered a need to clarify some aspects of the process to address commonly asked questions and ensure stability amongst Rectors. I also had concerns to bring forward for deliberation and resolution.

The Tricolour Award Selection Committee is made up of the President (or delegate) of the AMS, SGPS, and each Faculty Society. Therefore, when forming the Review Committee, I offered a seat to each of those groups. For additional insight, we had three alumni: a two-time member of the Award Selection Committee, a Tricolour Society member, and a previous Rector. The Review Committee was guided by making the Award process more accessible and ensuring the integrity of the Award.

After four meetings over four months, the Committee concluded its work and a new Terms of Reference has been published. These Terms will go into effect immediately for the upcoming Award cycle.

In summary, the Committee made the following changes:

  • Documented the Selection Committee membership, whereas previously, each group was not written down
  • Dictated a maximum length for each nomination letter (2 pages) and format specifications (Times New Roman, 12 point font, standard margins)
  • Clarified that the two nominees can either co-sign a letter or write their own letter
  • Highlighted that grade point averages are not considered and recommended against including in the package altogether
  • Implemented a standardized resume template that emphasizes Queen’s activities and acknowledges other contributions
  • Removed the Queen’s list of activities to avoid redundancy
  • Added one new award criteria to make students who have any sexual misconduct, sexual assault, harassment, or discrimination violations in their student file ineligible for the Award
  • Decided that the Selection Committee must be unanimous on the recipients
  • Decided that feedback is not allowed to be given on packages, resumes, or interviews

Thank you to the Review Committee for their time, insights, and care. I look forward to opening the 2026 Tricolour Award nominations at the end of October.
