Today the City of Kingston, along with neighbouring municipalities Port Hope, Cobourg and Belleville partnered with Abacus Data to survey residents and explore opportunities to enhance passenger rail service across Eastern Ontario – including adding a late-night train from Toronto-Kingston. Over the last few weeks VIA Rail has made several announcements on service that put into question the future of passenger rail in our community.

To help build the case for increased mobility options — including improved schedules and a potential late-night train from Toronto through Kingston and other communities — the city has launched a public survey to gather feedback on current travel patterns and future needs. The creation of this survey comes out of a meeting with VIA Rail leadership asking for data to support the idea of introducing additional service in this case a late-night train from Toronto to Kingston. Reliable and convenient rail connections are essential to supporting our economy, tourism, and workforce mobility. The insights gathered from this survey will help demonstrate the business and community demand for better train service in our area.
