The Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program aims to make Canada one of the world's top countries in research and development. The number of chairs held by an institution is determined by their share of annual Tri-Agency funding. Chairholders aim to achieve research excellence in engineering and the natural sciences, health sciences, humanities, and social sciences. They improve our depth of knowledge and quality of life, strengthen Canada's international competitiveness, and help train the next generation of highly-skilled people through student supervision, teaching, and the coordination of partnerships and collaborations.

Launched in 2008, the Canada Excellence Research Chairs (CERC) program supports Canadian universities in their efforts to build on Canada's growing reputation as a global leader in research and innovation. The program awards world-renowned researchers and their teams up to $10 million over seven years to establish ambitious research programs at Canadian universities. These awards are among the most prestigious and generous available globally.
The Canada 150 Research Chairs Program, announced in Budget 2017, invests $117.6 million to enhance Canada's reputation as a global centre for science, research and innovation excellence, in celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary. It provides Canadian institutions with a one-time investment to attract top-tier, internationally based scholars and researchers to Canada. The non-renewable chairs are tenable for seven years.
