Tradition of service: Queen’s alumni elect 10 members to University Council

Alumni have elected 10 fellow grads to serve on University Council. As members of one of Queen’s three governing bodies, these new and returning voices will help shape where Queen’s goes next.

The online election was held from May 13 to 27. Successful candidates were elected to four-year terms, and two – Chessa Jope, Com’09, and Elaine Wu, Artsci’98, MIR’00, Law’03 – were re-elected.

The successful candidates are:

  • Olufunke Igbede, MBI’24
  • Jennifer Janson, Artsci’95
  • Donika Jones, MPH’15
  • Chessa Jope, Com’09
  • Màiri MacDonald, Artsci’15, Law’19
  • John Marshall, Artsci’88, Meds’92
  • Rob Ramsay, Artsci’83, Sc’87
  • Michael Whitcombe, Law’85
  • Garry Willard, Meds’63
  • Elaine Wu, Artsci’98, MIR’00, Law’03

University Councillors keep alumni voices connected to Queen’s decision-making and long-term planning. As ambassadors and advisers, they represent alumni perspectives and make important contributions to the university.

Council is also responsible for the election of the chancellor, electing six councillors to sit on the Board of Trustees, and awarding the university’s annual Distinguished Service Awards.

Made up of 40 elected members, as well as the chancellor, principal, one senator, and the Queen’s University Alumni Association president, University Council has been part of Queen’s since 1874, when graduates were beginning to take on a more formal role in the university’s future.

More than 150 years later, Council remains one more example of how alumni continue to give back to Queen’s while helping shape what’s ahead.
