Colonel (Ret.) Quintin Wight was awarded the prestigious Pinch Medal for 2026, recognizing his outstanding and sustained contributions to the advancement and appreciation of mineralogy.
Wight’s lifelong dedication to mineral collecting, research, and education has made him one of the most respected figures in the international micromineral community. His 37-year career in the Royal Canadian Air Force took him to numerous locations around the world, providing opportunities to explore mineral localities and build what would become an extensive and highly regarded collection.
He began writing about minerals in 1966 and has since authored more than 200 articles and reviews on mineral-related subjects. His work has helped broaden interest in microminerals and has contributed significantly to the documentation and understanding of these specimens.
In 1990 he was inducted into the Micromounters’ Hall of Fame, and he now coordinates the organization on behalf of the Baltimore Mineral Society. From 2000 until the conclusion of the Rochester Mineralogical Symposium in 2019, he also organized and led an annual gathering of specialists in microscopic minerals.
