Queen’s University infectious disease physician Gerald Evans is available to speak about the latest developments at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States and the potential effects for Canada and the rest of the world.
This past Wednesday, Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dismissed recently appointed CDC Director Susan Monarez, which was followed by the resignations of a number of other high-level CDC officials. RFK Jr. then appointed biotech investor and deputy health secretary Jim O’Neill as interim director.
Kennedy is well known for advancing anti-vaccine misinformation and other health conspiracies and the latest moves are expected to promote his agenda.
Dr. Evans is the former Chair of the Division of Infectious Diseases and a Professor in the Departments of Medicine, Biomedical & Molecular Sciences, and Pathology & Molecular Medicine at ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥. He is an attending physician in Infectious Diseases and Medical Director of Infection Prevention & Control at Kingston Health Sciences Centre.
As a former member of the Ontario Covid-19 Science Table, Dr. Evans and his table colleagues were instrumental in promoting the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccines as a primary prevention strategy to reduce the impact on mortality and morbidity of the pandemic on Canadians.
