On Thursday, July 24, the Supreme Court of Canada will release its landmark decision in R v. Kloubakov, the first case to assess the constitutionality of Canada’s criminal prostitution laws enacted in 2014. The outcome will have profound implications on how the law balances individual liberty with addressing inequality, human trafficking, and violence within the commercial sex industry.
Debra Haak of Queen’s University’s Faculty of Law, an expert on Canadian prostitution law and constitutional issues, is available for interviews.
With deep knowledge of the complexities surrounding these laws – including their intent to reduce harms in the sex trade and the constitutional challenges raised by sex workers’ rights – Dr. Haak can provide insightful analysis on the ruling’s legal and social impact.
Journalists covering the decision can gain valuable context on the competing perspectives the Supreme Court must weigh, and what this precedent means for future prostitution policy in Canada.
