As Canada embarks on a landmark increase in defence spending – aiming to double investment by 2035 – an extraordinary opportunity arises to modernize military capabilities through Artificial Intelligence (AI) and supercomputing.

Ryan Grant, associate professor at Queen’s University and a leading expert in secure supercomputing and AI Exascale infrastructure, can provide authoritative analysis on how Canada can strategically leverage these technologies to advance defence innovation and sovereignty.

With Canada committed to raising defence spending to 5 per cent of GDP, Dr. Grant emphasizes the importance of allocating at least 1 per cent (more than $1 billion per year) of the defence budget toward R&D in AI and high-performance computing (HPC). Such investment will foster a robust innovation ecosystem by strengthening partnerships between academia, industry, and government, aligning Canada with NATO allies who treat defence R&D as a key strategic priority.

This expert perspective highlights how investments in AI and supercomputing will not only enhance military capability but also stimulate economic growth, technology commercialization, and sovereign industrial capacity – securing Canada’s position in global defence innovation.

Dr. Grant is available to provide interviews, commentary, and expert analysis on the intersection of AI, supercomputing, and military modernization.
