Queen’s Law has joined forces with the Kingston Native Centre and Language Nest to create a new Indigenous-led legal centre in Kingston. The KNCLN Indigenous Legal Centre (KILC), will provide important legal services to Indigenous people in the area. The project began with an idea from a first-year Queen’s law student and is now becoming a community effort supported by Queen’s Law expertise and resources.

Queen’s Law faculty leading research and support

Queen’s Law is playing a key role in building the KILC. Professors Lindsay Borrows and Kimberly Murray are guiding important research to find the best ways to set up the centre. They are helping students gather information from Indigenous communities and legal groups across Canada to learn about effective practices. Queen’s Law is also providing support through its legal clinics. This means students and faculty will work together to offer legal help to Indigenous clients, focusing on areas like family law, housing, and human rights.

Hands-on learning and community care

Queen’s Law is not just helping with research but also offering real-world learning opportunities for its students. Articling student, Aidan Jeffrey, is working with the centre to connect Indigenous clients to legal help and other supportive services like mental health and childcare. Supervised by Queen’s Law faculty, students will provide culturally respectful legal support at the centre. This gives students a chance to learn about Indigenous laws and traditions while helping meet the community’s legal needs.

Through this partnership, Queen’s Law is committed to expanding access to justice for Indigenous people and creating a respectful, safe place for legal and life support in Kingston.
