Queen’s University is expanding its , effective September 1, 2025, to provide eligible employees with enhanced support for their personal and professional development. The expansion is a result of recent collective bargaining negotiations with CUPE 229, 254, 1302 and USW Local 2010 (General Staff) to better reflect the university’s ongoing commitment to fostering a learning environment that supports the growth, skill development, and wellbeing of employees, while continuing to advance the institutional priority of professional development following the Employee Experiences Survey. As a matter of practice, these changes also apply to non-union employee groups who are eligible for TAP today.
For almost two decades, TAP has provided financial support to employees pursuing their own educational goals through two streams: the Educational Development Fund for studies at Queen’s, and the Professional Development Fund for studies at other recognized institutions. Both streams offer an annually renewable, non-taxable benefit.
As part of the recent expansion:
- The will now include waived tuition for select non-credit courses offered by Queen’s University, broadening access to learning opportunities beyond for-credit undergraduate and graduate programs. At this time, eligible non-credit courses are limited to specific offerings through the Faculty of Education. Examples include courses like English Language Support Tutorials (School of English) and Copyediting Standards (Professional Studies). Full course offerings can be found on the .
- The has increased its annual reimbursement maximum to $600 per academic year (September 1 to August 31), up from $400. In addition, the fund’s eligibility has been broadened to include career-related courses, expanding beyond the previous requirement that courses be job-related. Courses must be taken at recognized educational institutions outside of Queen’s.
There are no changes to existing eligibility requirements under TAP. Any details surrounding eligibility can be found in an employee’s applicable collective agreement or on the .
Employees are reminded that TAP is separate from the Tuition Support Plan, which provides financial assistance for the tuition of an eligible employee’s spouse and/or dependents.
