Queen’s remembers Professor Emeritus Agnes M. Herzberg

The distinguished statistician taught at Queen’s for 16 years.

The Queen’s community is remembering Dr. Agnes M. Herzberg, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Statistics, who passed away on June 2 at the age of 87.

Dr. Herzberg received her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) at Queen’s, and her master’s and PhD degrees from the University of Saskatchewan, where she also received an honorary degree in 2018. She joined Queen’s as a faculty member in 1988, and taught at the university for 16 years, before being appointed a professor emeritus in 2004. A distinguished statistician, her work included the statistical design of experiments and contributions to the design of clinical trials in medicine. In honour of her father, Gerhard Herzberg, winner of the 1971 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, she organized the Conference on Statistics, Science and Public Policy, dedicated to bridging the gap between disciplines. Additionally, Dr. Herzberg was the founding editor of Short Book Reviews, a publication of the International Statistical Institute. 

An obituary is available . The flag on campus will be lowered to half-mast in honour of Dr. Herzberg on June 16, 2026. In keeping with her wishes, a Memorial Gathering & Tea will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2026, from 1-3 p.m. at the James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd., Kingston, Ontario.
