Incoming faculty members had the chance to learn about a variety of campus resources during an information fair held during New Faculty Orientation Day.
Established and early career scholars from a wide variety of disciplines join Queen’s faculty each year, and the university works to connect them with senior leaders, institutional resources, and their new peers shortly after they arrive through the annual New Faculty Orientation Day. This year, Queen’s is building on that day-long event to offer the New Faculty Development Series pilot program, an expanded orientation that provides opportunities throughout the year to learn about how to thrive as a faculty member at the university. Sessions are open to all faculty members within the first three years of joining Queen’s.
“There is a lot to learn when starting out as a faculty member or moving to a new institution, and we want to make sure our newest faculty members know the university is here to help them,” says Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) Matthew Evans. “They all hold tremendous potential to become leading researchers in their fields as well as engaged members of the campus community, and our orientation sessions are designed to help them understand the resources available to them as they work to achieve those goals.”
The expanded programming this year includes additional sessions focused on topics that will help faculty members thrive as they navigate their new roles, such as graduate supervision and promoting inclusion. There are also new workshops that provide information on career progression at Queen’s as well as on the specifics of the renewal, tenure, and promotion (RTP) process.
The events in the pilot program are the result of a collaboration between many units on campus, including the Office of the Provost, Human Resources, the Human Rights and Equity Office, the Centre for Teaching and Learning, the School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs, and the Vice-Principal (Research) Portfolio.
“By expanding our offerings for new faculty members, we’re hoping to help answer the questions that arise for them while they’re establishing themselves in their new roles over the first months or years they are at Queen’s,” says Vice-Provost (Academic Affairs) Lynne-Marie Postovit. “As part of this expanded program, I will be hosting informal conversations with new faculty once a month, to give them an opportunity to ask questions about Queen’s in a casual setting while getting to know their new colleagues at the same time.”
The Coffee Chat Series with Dr. Postovit will focus on a different theme each month, such as research success, student engagement in the classroom, the transition from graduate student to faculty member, and the Kingston community.
