Robert Sutherland Hall, Room 301
138 Union St.
Welcome to the Black Liberation Commons! Located in Robert Sutherland Hall (home of Black Studies), the Commons was a vision for a black student space at Queen’s University put forward and realized through the dedication of Black Studies graduate and former Arts & Science Undergraduate Society president Amaiya Walters. While the University is a contentious and oftentimes uninviting space for black students, we hope that the Commons provides refuge and generates room for freedom dreaming and a radical reorientation towards community and belonging that has its roots in the Black Radical Tradition.
The Black Liberation Commons opened its doors on Thursday, February 8, 2024 with performances by black students, faculty, and community members and a special greeting from celebrated black scholars Carole Boyce Davies, nourbeSe philip, Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, Sylvia Tamale, Ruth Wilson Gilmore, and Robin D.G. Kelley.
The Black Liberation Commons is open Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Queen’s Black Clubs Caucus affiliated clubs should use the shared calendar, access to which is provided by the QBCC co-leads, to book events. For non-affiliated individuals or organization, to book the Commons outside of open hours or for an event, please fill out the booking form here: .
