Topics in History: British Commonwealth and Decolonization

British Commonwealth and Decolonization

By the end of the 20th century most of the world was free from formal colonial rule, and the empires that ruled the 19th century had all but disintegrated. Primarily focused on the British Empire, this course will explore the global history of decolonization in the 20th century and the emergence of the Commonwealth of Nations. In this course we will analyze primary and secondary sources to engage with topics and themes of nationalism and identity, political decolonization, anticolonial resistance, violence, internationalism, and settler-colonialism and decolonization. Through active and engaged discussions and written assignments students will develop a greater understanding of global decolonization, the Commonwealth, and the ongoing legacies of colonialism in our world today.
