Note for Arts & Science Joint Honours students

Students with a Joint Honours program should attend the ceremony associated with the first program alphabetically by Program Plan Code, not by program name.

  • Example: If you are in a Joint Honours program for Global Development Studies (DEVS) and Economics (ECON), you would be assigned to Ceremony 1 for DEVS instead of Ceremony 9 for ECON

Ceremony Day Of Information

Convocation ceremonies are formal events. Graduates and guests should review arrival times, venue expectations, and event policies before attending.

Some of the graduates and guests in attendance suffer from sensitivities due to scented products. We kindly request that you consider refraining from wearing scented products to this event.

Graduates

  • Graduates should arrive 1 hour before their ceremony start time.
    • 10 am ceremonies → arrive by 9 am
    • 2 pm ceremonies → arrive by 1 pm
    • 3 pm ceremonies → arrive by 2 pm
    • 6 pm ceremonies → arrive by 5 pm
  • Refer to ceremony schedules by Faculty/School and program.
  • Expect a significant amount of standing; comfortable footwear is recommended.
  • Bring your student card or alternative form of government identification. 
  • Leave personal belongings at home or with family members.

Special Accommodations for Graduates and / or Guests

If a graduate or guest attending Convocation has an accessibility need, seating can be reserved by

Gaspard and Sons (in conjunction with the Alma Mater Society) is the service provider for graduation regalia (hoods and gowns) at ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥.

Those interested in renting hoods and gowns can visit the Gaspard / AMS 'Build A Grad' online ordering portal. A link to the portal will be posted here when available.

Same day rentals will be available for those who did not pre-book regalia. If you did not rent online, please bring your Student ID, or Photo ID. Gaspard accepts Visa, MasterCard, Visa Debit and prepaid credit cards. Please note that prices will be higher for same day rentals.

Optional traditional attire for Indigenous graduates

Indigenous graduates and faculty may choose to wear traditional Indigenous attire (First Nations, Metis, or Inuit), in lieu of a gown and hood, at convocation ceremonies.

All graduates who choose to wear traditional regalia, or wish to receive a gift, must confirm arrangements with the Four Directions Indigenous Student Centre via an online submission form. This is to inform the event organizers.

Queen’s University acknowledges the diversity of Indigenous peoples, communities, and nations. As such it is recognized that traditional Indigenous attire may vary.

Guests

  • Doors open 1 hour before the schedule ceremony start time
  • There is no assigned seating
  • Ceremonies are expected to be approximately 75 minutes. 

Due to capacity and seating limits, graduates who have RSVP'd are limited to two (2) guests

  • The deadline for graduates to reserve guest tickets is October 7.
    • Those who did not reserve guest tickets by the deadline should email graduand@queensu.cafor assistance
  • Please note that physical tickets will not be issued. Guests will provide the name of their graduating student to ushering staff upon arrival.
  • There will be a ‘stand-by’ line at each ceremony where those patrons who were unable to secure tickets prior to the event will have an opportunity to obtain seating should unforeseen last-minute absences create available seats.

Please note that while those using the stand-by line at past Convocations have been able to secure seating, it is not guaranteed.

  • There is no guest coat check. Please minimize bags/belongings.   

  • Please ensure prohibited items are not brought into the building. Prohibited items include:  

    • Noisemakers, such as cow bells, air horns, musical instruments, megaphones, drums, or electronic noisemakers 

    • Aerosol cans (e.g. silly string)  

    • Liquids , except for personal water bottles. Additional exceptions will be made for accessibility.  

    • Large signs, banners, or flags that may obstruct the view of other guests  

    • Pamphlets, handouts, advertisements for distribution 

    • Items that could physically cause harm to other individuals or damage to the facilities 

    • Pets, except service animals (as defined by the Queen’s policy)

Directions

The Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts is located at 390 King Street West:

From Toronto (approx. 3 hours) 

  • Take Hwy 401E to Kingston. Exit Number #615 onto Sir John A. MacDonald Blvd. 
  • Continue on Sir John A. MacDonald Blvd. 
  • Turn left onto King Street West. 
  • The Isabel is on your right hand side, number 390.

From Ottawa (approx. 2 hours) 

  • Hwy 416 South to Hwy 401 West towards Kingston. 
  • Take exit #615 onto Sir John A MacDonald Blvd. 
  • Continue on Sir John A. MacDonald Blvd. 
  • Turn left onto King Street West. 
  • The Isabel is on your right hand side, number 390.

From the United States, entering at the Thousand Islands Bridge, Ivy Lea ON (approx. 50min)

  • I-81 North until entering Canada (partial toll road), 
  • Continue on Hwy 137 N, take the exit onto Hwy 401 W towards Kingston/Toronto. 
  • Take exit #615 onto Sir John A MacDonald Blvd. 
  • Continue on Sir John A. MacDonald Blvd. 
  • Turn left onto King Street West. 
  • The Isabel is on your right hand side, number 390.

Parking

The Isabel has 173 public parking spaces available for visitors. Located at 390 King Street West, there is limited parking in the lower and upper parking lots. 

Overflow parking is also available at 340 Union Street on the Union Street side of the Providence Transitional Care Centre lot (formerly St Mary’s of the Lake hospital). There is a walkway onto Ellerbeck Street from the south-west corner of the lot and a pedestrian activated traffic light at the top of the Isabel driveway to cross King Street safely.

Cars may drive in to drop off passengers at the front doors and turn around. This drop-off zone is limited to 5 minutes. Parking is strictly prohibited in the area outside the front doors of the Isabel. This is a fire route and should only be used for drop-off/pick-up purposes to ensure the safety of all.

There are also 4 Tesla Universal Chargers at the Isabel's lower parking lot, which work for all electric vehicles with no adaptor required.

Event Photography and Videography

Please note that photography and videography will be taking place at Convocation Ceremonies for promotional and archival purposes. The photographs and recordings may be used in applications including but not limited to print, broadcast, electronic, digital, and social media, for promoting, publicizing, or explaining Queen’s or its activities and for administrative, educational, or research purposes.
