Dr. David Lyon gave a keynote lecture entitled, ‘Trust and Transparency: A View from Surveillance Studies’ at the at the FGV in Rio de Janeiro on June 26 2019, and another keynote on ‘Emerging Private Surveillance Companies: a Threat to Civil Society’ at the biennial conference of (Red Latinamericana de estudios en Vigilancia, Technologia y Sociedad) in Salvador Bahia, Brazil on June 27 2019.

Congratulations to Rhea Ashley Hoskin who has won one of the two Queen’s University Governor General’s Academic Gold Medals for 2018-2019. This medal is awarded to a graduating or completed Master’s or Doctoral student in the School of Graduate Studies, chosen in competition with other nominated graduate students from across the University. It is awarded on the basis of outstanding academic achievement.

Sociology PhD Alumni, Midori Ogasawara, published a new book entitled Snowden Japan File: How Japan has been involved with America's Global Surveillance Systems on September 7th in Japan. She also launched a book tour in Japan in August and gave five public talks in the cities of Tokyo, Yokohama, Fukuoka and Nagasaki.
